A Soft Robot Reaches for the Stars - USC Viterbi
USC researchers are teaching a flexible, nature-inspired machine to crawl, cling and someday inspect spacecraft or explore places robots cannot reach USC researchers are developing a flexible, nature-inspired soft robot named STARFISH, which could potentially be used to inspect spacecraft or explore inaccessible environments. The concept was conceived by Kristina Andreyeva, director at USC Viterbi and the USC Space Engineering Research Center (SERC). Currently, the team is teaching the soft machine to move, grip and navigate in space to potentially diagnose and repair spacecraft. Unlike traditional space robots, STARFish has a central body and four soft tentacles, which bend continuously rather than only at a joint. The robot moves without motors and moves without movement. The project has progressed from an idea to a four-limbed laboratory prototype.
