Second rabid raccoon found in Westlake Village

A second rabies-positive raccoon was found in the Westlake Village area, L.A. County health officials confirmed, prompting renewed warnings for residents. For the first time in over 60 years, L.A. County has recorded a suspected case of rabies in a raccoon. The discovery has prompted warnings from residents to avoid contact with wild animals. The second raccoon was also found in a Westlake Village backyard, in the same general area where the first was located. The most recently discovered raccoon appeared sick and aggressive, but two people may have been exposed and receiving follow-up care. The first confirmed rabid raccoon in Los Angeles County in 1973 was found to be positive with a rabies variant typically found in bats. The last non-bat animal confirmed to have rabies was a skunk infected with the bat variant of rabie in Long Beach in 2014. The disease causes tens of thousands of human deaths globally each year, with most cases linked to exposure to dogs in countries where the dog strain of rabying is still present.
