Speed cameras are active in Los Angeles, impacting USC commuters

Around 20 cameras were activated on Monday, issuing warnings to drivers going over 11 miles per hour in certain areas. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) has installed around 20 speed safety cameras in locations around Los Angeles as part of the Speed Safety Systems Program, designed to limit speeding. The cameras will be installed at the University Park campus at South Figueroa Street and West Adams Boulevard, and another at the Health Sciences campus near the intersection of North Mission Road and Marengo Street. The program is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026. If drivers exceed the speed limit by 11 miles per hour or more, they will face a minimum of $50. Fines could reach as high as $500 if drivers are going over 100 miles per Hour. The department will issue warnings for the next 60 days before the violations are issued. California law prohibits the use of facial recognition technology or storage of interior vehicle images, ensuring enforcement focuses solely on vehicle speed and road safety.
