Second medical helicopter struck water before fatal Catalina crash, NTSB says

According to the NTSB preliminary report, the helicopter climbed slightly before pitching nose-down and striking the ocean about eight seconds later. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has revealed that a second medical helicopter struck the ocean twice before another helicopter crashed off Santa Catalina Island, killing three people. The NTSB's initial report details a separate incident involving a Mercy Air helicopter that had departed from Pebbly Beach Seaplane Base near Avalon 45 seconds earlier. The incident was reported by aviation-focused website TheDoctorMedic.com, which obtained an internal Air Methods safety report describing the pilot's account of striking the water shortly after takeoff. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the Mercy Air incident separately. The crash killed pilot Steven Robinson, flight nurse Jessica DeVries and patient Catalina Hernandez. The cause of the fatal crash has not been determined.
