Editorial: Playing catchup with a cleanup exposes SSA’s lax oversight

The federal government has a remarkable talent for transforming a confession of systemic negligence into a triumphant public relations victory. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has reportedly conducted a massive data scrub of its records, marking the first time the agency has undertaken a data correction effort of this magnitude. The agency has corrected nearly 15% of all active Social Security numbers, a process that spans roughly 330 million US citizens and covers nearly 390 million total records. This is seen as an admission of long-term operational failure by the agency, which treated clean records as an option rather than a requirement for distributing public funds. The changes were made to update approximately 25 million records that lacked citizenship information and are still in the process of correcting an additional 8.5 million records plagued by inaccurate citizenship status within their master database. This raises questions about whether the federal government has been doling out millions of dollars to undeserving recipients for years.
