Los Angeles speed camera program goes live: Speed limits, fines, locations and other details - The Economic Times

Los Angeles is launching its speed camera initiative today to tackle speeding and enhance road safety. With 20 strategically placed cameras in high-traffic and high-risk areas, drivers caught exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph will incur automated fines. As a grace period, the first two months will see violators receiving warnings. The program also prioritizes privacy, as images of compliant vehicles will be deleted within five days. Los Angeles' speed camera program, authorized under California Assembly Bill 645, is set to go live from October 26, 2026 with a total of 20 cameras placed in crucial areas to reduce speeding, prevent fatal crashes and improve road safety across the city. The five-year initiative is expected to cost approximately $38.5 million. The cameras will capture images of vehicles' rear license plates to identify speeding violations. Drivers caught exceeding speed limits by at least 11 mph will be subject to automated enforcement, with fines starting at $50 for driving 11 to 15 mph over the limit, $100 for speeds 16 to 25 mph over, $200 for speeds 26 to 99 mph over and $500 for speeds exceeding 100 mph. The first phase includes 20 cameras, with the city planning to expand the network to 125 locations during the five-years pilot program. The program has sparked controversy over privacy, with LADOT stating that the cameras will not use facial recognition technology.
