Cross-pavement EV chargers no longer need planning permission, saving drivers up to £300 - News Anyway
Drivers without a driveway can now fit cross-pavement home chargers without planning permission, saving up to £300, the Department for Transport said. The Department for Transport has decided that drivers without a driveway no longer need planning permission for cross-pavement EV chargers, saving them up to £300. The change was made after a consultation from 14 November 2025 to 21 January 2026, with most respondents backing a new permitted development right to simplify the process. The department also stated that the change opened up home charging for as little as 2p per mile. Changes to permitted development rights also make it easier and cheaper for charge point operators to install larger public charging hubs. The Department for Transportation linked the change to demand, with September 2026 seeing a 36% increase in UK electric car sales.
