Intangible Juju Magic
Any company billing itself as morally or otherwise exceptional is selling a myth. CLAIRE Stapleton's new memoir, Don't Be Evil: Bad Bosses, Fake Promises, and My Escape from Big Tech, details her 12-year tenure at Google, which led to her disenchantment and departure from the company. The book is a damning indictment of Big Tech for evading accountability and transparency, but also a reminder of the company's ruthless pursuit of profit and power. Stapletons' portrayal of Google as a powerful force for social good contrasts with Sarah Wynn-Williams' book Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism, which both shed light on hypocritical, empathy-deficient Big Tech cultures and uses satire. Despite this, Staplon argues that while tech executives admit that the public doesn't trust their companies, the public is increasingly wary of AI. He also notes that universities are in a busy schedule and that morale at universities has been low, making it more difficult for academics to maintain a focus on meaningful work.
