Irvine Lake begins mass draining project for upgrades to 93-year-old reservoir
Irvine Lake began its mass draining process this morning to allow for an upgrade to the 93-year-old reservoir that provides water to 1.5 million residents in Orange County. Irvine Lake has begun a massive draining project to prepare for the El Niño and upgrade the 93-year-old reservoir. The work is part of the Irvine Ranch Water District's $470 million Santiago Creek Dam improvement, which provides drinking and irrigation water to 1.5 million residents in Orange County. The district aims to replace the outlet tower and the spillway completely, bringing them up to state-of-the-art seismic safety. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife cannot enforce relocation of non-native species that live in a private lake. The goal is to restock the lake when the project is completed in 2032.
