2nd rabid raccoon found in Westlake Village
Those who notice sick wildlife should not approach the animal, but should call their local animal control department. A second rabies-positive raccoon has been found in the Westlake Village area, Los Angeles County, prompting warnings from residents to avoid contact with wild animals. This follows the discovery of the first rabid raccoon in the county since 1973 in early October. The second raccoon was also found in a Westlake village backyard, in the same general area where the first was found. Two people at a worksite in the area may have been exposed and receiving follow-up care. The first raccoon tested positive with a rabies variant typically found in bats. The last non-bat animal confirmed to have rabies in Los Angeles county was a skunk infected with the bat variant of rabies. Officials recommend vaccinating indoor-only cats and older pets, and ensuring all pets stay current on their rabies vaccine. Once symptoms of rabying become clinical symptoms, it is almost always fatal but timely administration of rabied post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is effective at preventing disease.
