Los Angeles Switches On Speed Cameras at $4,450 a Month Apiece, Then Gives Drivers 60 Days of Warnings Before $50 Tickets Start

Los Angeles turned on its first speed cameras Oct. 26. Warnings run 60 days, then fines start at $50 under a $33.4 million Verra Mobility contract. Los Angeles has begun testing its first speed cameras, with the first systems set to activate on Oct. 26 and all 125 are expected to be running by the end of 2026. The city will mail warnings instead of tickets for drivers photographed going 11 mph or more over the limit. The fines come in four tiers: $50 for 11 to 15 mph over the posted limit, $100 for 16 to 25 over, $200 for 26 or more, and $500 for 100 mph or over. The agreement with LADOT covers up to 125 cameras for five years, costing $4,450 per camera per month, and includes $33,375,000 in base fees, plus up to $5 million to reimburse postage. However, state law requires ticket revenue to cover program costs first, with whatever remaining funds will go towards traffic calming.
