Los Angeles County Confirms First Two Flu Deaths of the Season as Early H1N1 Activity Pushes Admissions Higher

LA County confirmed its first two flu deaths of the season as weekly flu admissions rose from 115 to 144. Who faces the highest risk, and why does a shot still help? Two older adults in Los Angeles County have died of the flu, the first flu-related deaths of the 2026-27 season, according to the county Department of Public Health. The deaths come as flu is arriving in Southern California well ahead of its usual schedule, with weekly flu hospital admissions increasing from 115 to 144 in the week ending Oct. 10 and 7.9% of specimens tested at county laboratories positive for flu. The county's Health Officer, Dr. Muntu Davis, has urged everyone 6 months and older to get a flu vaccine as soon as possible. The CDC's weekly FluView report found that 5.7% of national specimens tested for flu were positive for the flu. Other states are also reporting early deaths, with Idaho confirming its first flu death of the season.
