Pediatricians Weren’t Trained to Treat Childhood Depression
Parents are increasingly turning to their child’s primary-care doctor for mental-health help. But many doctors say they’re ill prepared for the task. Pediatricians are not being trained to treat childhood depression, according to a recent conference hosted by Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the California chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The conference, which was held for general pediatricians, was held in response to data from nearly 2 million children’s pediatric visits in Massachusetts showing that visits related to their mental health have significantly increased over the last decade, growing from 9.5 percent of pediatric visits to 16.2 percent in 2023. The solution to these issues is to train pediatricians who already have regular contact with patients and are trusted providers. However, implementing mental-health assessments and treatment in a pediatrician’'s office is rarely straightforward. A recent survey of graduating pediatric residents found that nearly half felt confident in addressing patients’ mental- health needs overall.
