Raven Sanchez Is Preserving Family Memory Through Art
City College alum Raven Sanchez transforms her family home’s textures into mixed-media works exploring memory, loss and intergenerational connection. Raven Sanchez, a multidisciplinary artist, has displayed her work at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, from April 4 to August 23, 2026. Her first solo exhibition, "Así Sea / So Be It," featured over 200 rubbings on paper capturing the exterior stucco of her family home in East Los Angeles. Sanchez, who started painting at City College, has expanded her practice into sculpture and mixed media. Her work expresses both absence and continuity, turning the physical marks of a house into a language of memory. Her ongoing sculpture series "Familial Feeling" uses materials gathered from the family home and surrounding community. The curator, Emilia Shaffer-Del Valle, felt a strong emotional and intellectual connection to the artwork, which inspired her to collaborate with Sanchez to bring the exhibition public.
