New license plate-reading cameras are coming to West San Fernando Valley. Here's what to know
Council District 3, which includes Encino, Woodland Hills and Tarzana, will see cameras clamped to the top of street lights. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) will proceed with a pilot program to install new automatic license plate readers on streetlights in the San Fernando Valley. The three-month program, which had already been approved by the LA Police Commission, will begin in Council District 3 in Encino, Woodland Hills and Tarzana. The LAPD's contract with Axon Enterprise will clamp cameras to the tops of streetlights, drawing power from the lights' electrical connections. However, a majority of the 15-member council wanted to block implementation, pushing for additional guardrails for privacy protection. Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez proposed sending the pilot program back to the LAPD board for further review, while Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez argued that the cameras may be unsettling to communities traumatized by ongoing immigration raids. The Police Commission approved the pilot after many new limits on the use of the cameras, including stopping most data sharing outside the LAPD, including with other police agencies that could share data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
