USC professor Azad Madni wins John Fritz Medal, engineering’s top honor
Madni joins Thomas Edison and Andrew Viterbi among recipients of the century-old award. Azad Madni, a USC professor of astronautical engineering and aerospace and mechanical engineering, has won the John Fritz Medal, the top honor in engineering. The award recognises his advances in transdisciplinary systems engineering through the use of AI to enhance human abilities rather than replace humans. Madni's work has been particularly relevant as AI is becoming increasingly integrated into daily life. His approach to engineering combines methods from multiple disciplines, and he has worked in AI since 1978. Gaurav Sukhatme, interim dean of the Viterbi School of Engineering, said Madni’s research into new frameworks for human-AI collaboration and control is essential.
