Redondo Beach Approves Nearly $2M For Emergency Drain, Sewer Repairs

Aging underground pipes could cause sinkholes, flooding and road damage as the city prepares for potentially heavy winter storms. The City Council of Redondo Beach has unanimously approved an amendment to its agreement with Toro Enterprises Inc. increasing the contract's maximum value from $378,875 to $1,978,875. Additional authorization includes $800,000 for storm drain maintenance and repairs, and $800k for sanitary sewer services. This comes as officials prepare for potentially heavier rainfall associated with El Niño conditions, raising concerns about the ability of aging drainage systems to withstand severe weather. The expanded agreement will provide routine, urgent and emergency maintenance at locations identified by city engineers rather than specific repair sites. Although the revised agreement allows nearly $2 million in total spending, individual projects must be authorized as needed.
