Former USC quarterback reported missing off Gulf of Mexico

A former University of South Carolina quarterback has been reported missing after a fishing trip, WBRC reports. Chris Smelley, former University of South Carolina quarterback, has been reported missing from a fishing trip off the Grayton Beach, Florida. Both the U.S. Coast Guard in Mobile, Ala., and Florida authorities are currently searching for him. He went fishing in a blue and black kayak and has not yet returned. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office and the local fire department are using jet skis to search the water off Grayton Beach. Smalley, who transferred to the University of Alabama after his football career, is currently the head football coach at Sylacauga High School.

GRAYTON BEACH, Fla. (WIS) - A former University of South Carolina quarterback has been reported missing after a fishing trip, WBRC reports.

Chris Smelley, 37, went fishing in a blue and black kayak around 8:30 a.m. and has not yet returned, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office and the local fire department are searching in the water off the Grayton Beach with jet skis.

Both the U.S. Coast Guard in Mobile, Ala., and Florida authorities are searching for Smelley.

Smelley arrived at South Carolina in 2006. He started two games as quarterback after starter Tommy Beecher went out with a concussion.

He was the started for the 2008 regular season, throwing for 1,922 yards and 14 touchdowns. During his time at USC, Smelley won SEC Freshman of the week.

After his football career, he transferred to the University of Alabama where he played baseball and was a catcher.

Smelley went to high school in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and played football at American Christian Academy.

According to WBRC, he is the head football coach at Sylacauga High School in Sylacauga, Ala.
