Los Angeles public school parents are sending a clear message. Is the district listening?

A recent poll shows the district receiving largely positive marks from local parents despite their widespread dissatisfaction with the direction of the state and city. But the same poll shows the district might not know how to leave well enough alone by pushing forward with broad restrictions on classroom technology. The poll, conducted in July […] A recent poll by President Biden's primary pollster, Impact Research, found that while half of LAUSD parents believe California and Los Angeles are moving in the wrong direction, 56% of parents give the district a positive job rating. The poll also found that 54% rate the district's academic support negatively. Despite this, the district has seen test scores rise for the fifth consecutive year and implemented more effective instructional methods and curriculum. However, the gains were modest, with fewer than half of students being proficient in English and about 40% in math. The district's recent restrictions on classroom technology focused on district-issued laptops and tablets students use for classwork. The board's board presentation lists “manage cumulative screen exposure” as a guiding principle, but most agree that Instagram scrolling and educational games are not of equal value in a classroom.
