L.A. homicides are down to near-historic lows — but killings of Black men persist

Homicides in Los Angeles have fallen to levels not seen since the 1960s, but more than a third of those killed this year have been Black. While gang intervention workers have been credited with reducing shootings in the most troubled neighborhoods, some have become victims of violence themselves. Homicides in Los Angeles have dropped to near-historic lows, with 35% of the city's homicide victims being Black, despite the city accounting for just 8% of its population. Black victims accounted for 57 of the 162 recorded homicides through mid-September, down from 75 at this point last year. This is a significant turnaround from the previous pandemic crime surge. The cause of the decline may not be known for years, with disparities in access to healthcare, jobs, and adequate housing thought to be factors that affect crime rates in communities of color. The low homicide numbers have been a key issue in the mayoral race, with Mayor Karen Bass emphasizing the crime drop more than her opponent Nithya Raman. Both Raman and Bass have advocated for hiring more gang intervention workers and investing in alternatives to policing.
