A domestic violence suspect was fatally shot by Riverside police officers Thursday when he allegedly confronted them with a knife at a downtown residence.

The shooting occurred at 5:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of Chestnut Street, near Fourth Street, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Agency spokesman Officer Ryan Railsback told City News Service that officers were sent to investigate reports of a domestic assault at a property, and "when they arrived, a suspect armed with a knife confronted them."

"They used a less-than-lethal force option to attempt to de-escalate the situation,'' Railsback said. "Shortly after, an officer-involved shooting occurred.''

The alleged assailant, described only as a Riverside man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics minutes later.

"The female domestic violence victim was treated for a serious injury caused by the suspect and taken to a local hospital in stable condition," Railsback said.

She was identified only as a woman in her 50s.

Under municipal policy No. 307, the officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation conducted by the police department's Robbery-Homicide Unit, in cooperation with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.
