Port of L.A. details clean air progress in 2025 emissions report
Each year, the port inventories air pollution from ships, trucks, trains, harbor craft and cargo-handling equipment. The Port of Los Angeles recorded its lowest annual emissions per shipping container in 2025, a milestone in its two-decade effort to reduce pollution. The port has reduced diesel particulate matter emissions by 90%, nitrogen oxides by 72%, sulfur oxides, and greenhouse gases by 16%, despite container volumes increasing by 37%. Since 2005, the port has also reduced diesel particle matter emissions, nitrogen oxide emissions, and SOx emissions. In 2025 alone, emissions of DPM fell 2%, NOx declined 4%, SOx dropped 5%, and GHGs decreased 3% compared with 2024. The South Coast Air Quality Management District stated that the ports of L.A. and Long Beach are the single largest source of air pollution in Southern California.
