A Midlife Review
Callie Garnett turns seemingly banal observations into grist for philosophical rumination while stuck on a run-of-the-mill shit hike. Callie Garnett's new collection, Shit Hike, is a reckoning with midlife, with many of the poems set against a backdrop of hiking hikes. The title poem, "Tits," begins by lamenting the passage of time, with the subject being snowed in personified and endowed with open-ended self-awareness. The closing line of the poem suggests that while self-knowledge comes at a cost, it increases with age. Garnett’s work is inspired by Gertrude Stein’s relational poetics, an approach driven by word association. These poems offer some possible ways of coping with heightened self-awareness.
