New speed cameras arrive in Los Angeles. Here's what drivers should know
There are new eyes across L.A. trying to catch speeders. The city's first automated speed-enforcement cameras are targeting drivers going at least 11 mph over the limit. Los Angeles has launched a new automated speed-safety system, using the city's first automated speed enforcement cameras to catch drivers going at least 11 mph over the limit. The cameras are triggered when drivers are traveling at least 10 mph over their posted speed limit. They are designed to capture images of rear license plates, not the faces of drivers or passengers. The city plans to install 125 cameras by year's end and issue warnings by mail during a 60-day period before fines take effect. Motorists traveling 11 to 15 mph over this limit will face $50 fines, with penalties increasing for higher speeds. Violations result in civil penalties rather than traditional traffic tickets, meaning no points will be added to a driver's DMV record. As of Monday, cameras were operating in four areas.
