USC clinical trial aims to use blood tests for early breast cancer detection

Researchers are studying how blood biopsy can help to identify breast cancer. Researchers at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center are working on a clinical trial to use blood tests for early breast cancer detection. The study, led by Anastasia Martynova, a breast medical oncologist and assistant professor of clinical medicine at Keck Medicine, aims to use a liquid biopsy designed to spot cancer-specific particles in the blood to pair with existing methods of detecting breast cancer. The liquid biopsie uses around 2.5 million cells and labels different types of cells with colored markers to separate cancer-like cells from normal cells. The clinical trial currently requires participants to have an initial blood draw and then return for another draw about a year later. If successful, researchers hope to make widely accessible mobile blood-draw kits and at-home blooddraw kits.
