California horse town brings in maverick solution to ‘extremely dangerous’ boulevard

A long-stalled horse crossing project on Sunland Boulevard in Shadow Hills, approved in 2021, is getting more than $400,000 in additional funding. The Los Angeles City Council has approved $892,500 in additional funding for a long-stalled horse crossing on Sunland Boulevard in Shadow Hills, California. The funding, introduced by Councilmember Monica Rodriguez, adds to the $455,500 approved in 2021 for a signal that riders can activate to cross Sunland Blvd at Johanna Avenue. The project, described as a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacon signal, would allow equestrians to cross from the bridle path on the north side of Sunland to the trail system on the south side, enhancing connectivity through the Foothills horse-keeping communities. The funds were drawn from the city’s Equestrian Facilities Trust Fund, which holds equine license fees paid annually by riders in Los Angeles and is devoted to building new equestrian facilities.
