Closing and Redeveloping Whiteman Airport Could Cost Billions, per Los Angeles County's Study
Whiteman Airport Coalition Los Angeles County has released a $2.1 million Whiteman Airport Land Use Study and Economic Impact Analysis, which revealed significant findings about the airport's financial performance, safety record and future. The study, which did not recommend closing the airport, found that both scenarios that keep Whiteman open and redeveloping the land could result in financial losses and significant federal approval challenges. The proposed closure and redevelopment plan is estimated to cost $3.46 billion, plus approximately $90 million for demolition and environmental cleanup. Whiteman is the only profitable general aviation airport in the county, generating a $1.1M operating surplus and accounting for nearly one-third of the County airport system's operating revenue. The public health review found no evidence of elevated blood lead levels near Whiteman compared to countywide conditions.
