In the face-off with the storied Dodgers, Luis Gil’s resistance shone through, even though his pitch wasn’t on point, contributing to the Yankees’ 6-4 victory to clinch the last game in the set at The Bronx.

The young right-hander, arriving off a staggering sequence of starts letting just four hits slip by him, experienced a dip in Sunday night’s game, surrendering three runs on five hits over 5 ²/₃ innings, his most abbreviated endeavor in a month-plus.

Yet, his grit didn’t go unnoticed. Manager Aaron Boone and fellow Yankees highlighted Gil’s approach against the Dodgers’ premier hitters — Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie •Freeman, and Will Smith — who managed a meager one hit in 11 at-bats against him.

“Facing one of the toughest lineups, he stepped up in a major way,” Aaron Judge commented. “Though he left behind with the Dodgers leading after allowing three runs, his aggression towards those star batters…that’s exactly who you’d want in such a clutch scenario.”

“It felt like a real combat,” said Gil, aided by a translator. “But, also, quite enjoyable.”

Gil had been exceptional in his recent performances, conceding three earned runs and 15 hits across 44 ²/₃ innings in seven starts. On Sunday, it took until the fourth inning for him to relinquish a hit — Teoscar Hernández’s leadoff double.

Gil, however, stranded the runner on base.

The fifth inning saw Gil yielding a sharp double to Andy Pages and a single to Gavin Lux, moving Pages to third.

After Lux stole second, Gil struck out Kiké Hernández, but couldn’t prevent Mookie Betts’ two-run double to left, balancing the ledger at 2-2.

Boone observed signs of fatigue in Gil, resulting in the solo home run by Teoscar Hernández—the catalyst for Gil’s conclusion in the sixth inning.

The three runs were the most he’s allowed since a five-run game at Milwaukee on April 26.

Crucially, outfielder Trent Grisham, standing in for Juan Soto, delivered a monumental three-run homer, overturning the deficit against Tyler Glasnow in the sixth.

Thanks to Gil’s resilience and Grisham’s heroics, the Yankees have triumphed in all but two of Gil’s 13 starts.

Despite the uneven performance on Sunday, Gil still boasts an impressive ERA of 2.04.

“From my brief time with him, he thrives in intense moments,” Judge noted. “I’m excited for what’s next for him.”
