The Toronto Blue Jays recently agreed to trade infielder Cavan Biggio to the Los Angeles Dodgers after previously designating him for assignment. So what does the move mean for Toronto's future?
Just a few years ago, the Blue Jays core was expected to be among the best in baseball. Former MLB All-Stars' sons anchored the lineup with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Cavan Biggio. Biggio, however, struggled to find his footing at the MLB level.
Guerrero and Bichette have displayed signs of stardom over the years, but the results have been less than ideal in 2024. With Guerrero and Bichette set to enter free agency soon, trade rumors have swirled around the Blue Jays stars this season.
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes the Biggio deal may be the “start of the end” for this specific Blue Jays core of players.
“I don't know that this is the end, it may mark the start of the end,” Rosenthal said on Foul Territory. “Certainly the whole Bichette, Guerrero question lingers over this franchise. Each has a year of additional control after this one. They're free agents after the '25 season. The Jays have not signed either long-term. I'm not sure they want to sign either long-term.
“At some point, if this season doesn't turn around, they're at least going to need to listen at the deadline.”
Rosenthal is not sure if the Blue Jays will trade Guerrero and/or Bichette this season. He did acknowledge that Toronto will need to make a difficult decision within the next year, though. If the Blue Jays fail to either trade or sign Bichette and Guerrero before they enter free agency, Toronto will risk losing them for almost nothing in return.
The Blue Jays will be one of the most intriguing teams to follow ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Toronto is currently hovering around the .500 mark. They could realistically surge back into the postseason conversation.
If the Blue Jays struggle over the next few weeks, Toronto may opt to enter a rebuild and trade their stars away. The Blue Jays' final decision will completely change the dynamic of the 2024 trade deadline.
Teams will pay close attention to the Blue Jays in July. Even trading one of Guerrero or Biggio will impact the deadline in a huge way. Both players feature extremely high-ceilings and are capable of playing pivotal roles for contending teams.
Things did not work out for Biggio in Toronto. Perhaps the former top prospect will find a role in Los Angeles with the Dodgers. He is a versatile player and utility men have been able to enjoy solid careers in LA over the years.
“Certainly for the Dodgers… He fits as a left-handed hitter,” Rosenthal said on Foul Territory. “And with (Max) Muncy out, they've lacked that a little bit. He's versatile, he can play a number of positions… They can bounce him around and it gives them more of a left-handed presence. I don't know that he threatens (Gavin) Lux necessarily. If he gets hot, certainly they're going to give that a look.”
The Dodgers feature a talented enough ball club to compete with or without Biggio. Adding depth never hurts, though. Perhaps Biggio will get hot as Rosenthal mentioned. And if that occurs, the trade will look like a steal for the Dodgers.
