Federal judge rules US prosecutor in Los Angeles Bill Essayli isn't legally serving
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that Republican Bill Essayli is not legally serving as the top U.S. prosecutor in Los Angeles. Federal Judge J. Michael Seabright has ruled that Republican Bill Essayli is not legally serving as the top U.S. prosecutor in Los Angeles. This ruling is part of a challenge to the Trump administration's attempt to extend its handpicked acting U.M. attorneys beyond the 120-day limit set by federal law. Essayali was appointed by the Trump Administration last year to serve as Acting U.D. Attorney for the Central District of California. However, in October 2025, Seabwright disqualified Essayili from overseeing several criminal cases, concluding he had stayed in the temporary job longer than allowed by law. The ruling will not take effect until the court reviews the government's appeal.
